Stroke & Cerebrovascular DiseaseHome > High Risk Information > Stroke & Cerebrovascular Disease Risk Issue:Cerebrovascular disease exists where brain or spinal cord impairments results from a blood vessel disorder. Included in this category are CVAs (cerebrovascular accidents or strokes) and TIAs (transient ischemic attack). A CVA is an interruption of the flow of blood to the brain for a period typically of more than 24 hours due to a blockage, clogged vessels or spasms. A TIA is a relatively short interruption (a few minutes to a few hours) of the arterial blood supply to a portion of the brain. A TIA usually does not cause permanent neurological damage. Either of the incidents described will cause an insurance company to underwrite most carefully to gain their opinion of adequate premium. If the TIA occurred in the past 6-months or the CVA (stroke) occurred in the past year, most insurance companies will not underwrite the risk.
